About the Event
Figuring Shit Out hosts perspective-driven events for founders who want more than the usual panels or startup Q&As. Each session invites speakers to share a lens shaped by their own experience building or supporting companies.
In this talk, I’ll be sharing an idea that sits at the centre of my work at HelmCrew: the concept of a calm startup.
Many founders assume that building something meaningful will inevitably mean constant urgency. More work, more pressure, more moving parts. But over time I’ve noticed that some businesses seem to live in permanent firefighting mode, while others grow steadily without everything feeling rushed or reactive.
A calm startup isn’t about slowing down or avoiding ambition. It’s a business where:
decisions don’t feel rushed or reactive
growth creates leverage instead of more chaos
founders can pursue opportunities without everything becoming urgent
Drawing on nearly two decades of working with early-stage startups, I’ll explore why some businesses fall into response mode and how founders can think about designing companies that grow without running on fumes.
What attendees will walk away with
A new lens for understanding urgency inside startups
A way to distinguish natural startup mess from structural stress
A simple framework for designing calmer growth
